You’ve heard of voguing, but do you know where it came from? We can tell you this much, it’s not from Madonna! Ballroom culture originated in New York City in the 1960s. It was a place for queer people of colour to “walk” their given categories for trophies and cash prizes. Since then, the culture has evolved far beyond a competition, creating a safe space for youth to connect with their chosen family.

After decades of this underground “ballroom” culture being hidden from the mainstream light, it’s time to showcase these marginalized individuals in their fight for inclusion and to be seen in full colour. “Balls to the Wall” will follow the larger than life personalities of Toronto’s underground ballroom community, as they navigate day to day life through to the most elaborate dance competition you’ve ever seen.
